The Australian Tea Tree, botanical name Melaleuca alternifolia, is a shrub-like tree that grows exclusively in a limited district of New South Wales, Australia. It looks ordinary enough, foilating the swampy bush areas of its subtropical homeland, however it is anything but ordinary. Used through the ages by the aborigines, Australia's bush tribesmen, the tree was first discovered by the civilized world when on his round-th-world voyage of discovery, Captain Cook brewed it as tea for his sailors in an effort to cure scurvy. Captain Cook christened the plant "Tea Tree," and so it has been called ever since.

The usefullness of the Tea Tree was rediscovered in 1922 by A.R.Penfold. In a report for the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences in Sydney, Penfold hailed the distilled oil of Melaleuca alternifolia as effective in dealing with many problems. Since that time, there has been increasing interest in tea tree oil and scores of research projects corroborating Penfold's findings.
