Redbook (Vol. 172, No. 4) printed a review of the role of progesterone in women’s health. The article is based on information provided by a fertility specialist who is also a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia.

Readers are told that progesterone assures uniform shedding of the uterine lining each month. Whereas estrogen builds up the endometrium during the first half of each menstrual cycle, progesterone prepares it for the implantation of a fertilized egg after ovulation. If fertilization does not occur, the ovaries stop production of progesterone (usually after 14 days) and menstruation begins. If fertilization does occur, adequate amounts of progesterone in the uterine wall will allow the egg to attach itself to the endometrium and remain securely in place.

When a woman reaches her 30’s and 40’s, progesterone levels can drop below normal, causing her periods to occur more frequently. When the ovaries produce progesterone for only nine or ten days instead of the usually 14, a woman who normally had periods every 30 days may begin to menstruate every 25 days.

Low levels of progesterone, as well as relatively high levels of estrogen, can also cause tissue buildup. This combination can lead to the formation of so much excess tissue that there is abnormally heavy flow during menstruation and spotting between periods. Severe progesterone deficiency can even stop the endometrial shedding process altogether, resulting in missed periods. Prolonged deficiency can lead to endometrial hyperplasia, a condition that can increase the risk of uterine cancer. And a low progesterone/estrogen ration can cause symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as anxiety, irritability, depression, headache, dizziness, and bloating.

Finally, if a woman’s ovaries do not produce enough progesterone to maintain pregnancy through the first trimester, when the placenta takes over the job of making progesterone, a miscarriage will occur.

Progesterone treatment may also help infertile women. Those having trouble conceiving or who have had unexplained first trimester miscarriages are urged to discuss the possibility of progesterone deficiency with their physicians; according the article, physicians often treat infertility with strong medication or surgery without first checking progesterone levels. Progesterone therapy has helped many women become pregnant and carry a child to term. Therefore, it should be considered as an alternative before more drastic measures are taken.

The following is a breakout of the ingredients found in NP50 Balancer and what each one does.

Mexican Wild Yam Extract has been grown commercially in Mexico since it's discovery.  It contains compounds that are similar in chemical structure to steroids, these compounds must be digested, absorbed and processed by one's body before becoming steroids or hormones.

Chamomile extract is strongest on the liver and kidneys where it stimulates the organs to purge themselves of toxins.

Burdock root extract is primarily a blood purifier.  It absorbs toxins from ingested food and those produced by intestinal flora.  Viscous fiber eliminates the source of many of the toxins.  This allows the body to heal itself.

Black cohosh root extract is best known as a remedy for various ailments of the female reproductive system.

Siberian ginseng stimulates the adrenal, pancreas, and pituitary glands to lower blood sugar and reduces inflammation.  For more information see the section on Siberian ginseng.

Dandelion root extract is the principle herb of blood purifier, kidney and pancreas formulas.  Dandelion contains flavonoids that provide its diuretic properties.  These compounds are very important to the actions of nearly all blood purifiers.  Besides increasing the flow of urine, these compounds relieve muscle spasms and reduce inflammation.  Since vitamin A is stored in the liver, the purging process stimulated by the bitter principles in dandelion would undoubtedly release some of the vitamin A stored in the liver and provide a ready supply of this essential nutrient to other byody systems.

Gelatin provides a concentrated source of protein which, when digested, contributes free amino acids to the digestive broth.  The amino acids can then combine with minerals to form mineral chelates that are easily absorbed by the small intestine.

The NP50  Balancer enters the bloodstream, and from there travels throughout the body and into cells, where it is converted into male hormones, known as androgens, and female hormones, known as estrogens.  Whether NP50 Balancer is converted predominantly into androgens or estrogens depends on a person's medical condition, age and sex.  The males, the testicles also make androgens, while in females, before menopause, the ovaries also make estrogens.  Women make less NP50 than men.

Since NP50 levels decline with age it is useful as hormone replacement therapy.  The theory behind supple3menting with NP50 is that after about age 30, our bodies naturally produce less of this hormone.  The expectation is that by supplementing the body's low level of this hormone, we will be able to slow down symptoms of aging and provent degenerative disease.  Evidence suggests other benefits, including more energy and an increased sex drive.
